MOSCONE CENTER EXPANSION PROJECT

San Francisco, CA    City and County of San Francisco Public Works

Demolition of a six story concrete structure at the corner of Fourth Street and Howard, Downtown San Francisco.  The top two floors of this structure were built using structural steel; the remaining floors consisting of poured-in-place concrete.  The building had a glass facade that looked out over Fourth St.  During the demolition process it was discovered that the building was constructed substandard concrete and the engineering demolition plan had to be altered during the project to ensure public safety.  Instead of felling all six stories of the structure, the top two floors had to be dismantled by hand and the structural steel was hoisted from the building with live traffic moving below.  The project was completed without a safety incident.

DEMOLITION OF SB I-680 TEMPORARY VIADUCT AT I-680/24 INTERCHANGE

Walnut Creek, CA    C.C. Myers

Demolition of eleven freeway overpasses including a 2,100 of two-lane bridge. The 90-foot high structure spanned the newly designed interchange that had three bridges facilitating traffic below.  Bridge demolition was performed at night. 24 steel girders in lengths of 140', weighing 22 tons each, were carefully unbolted and removed unharmed from the five south spans to be used in the Olympic blvd. off-ramp.

DEMOLITION OF FORMER ELEMENTIS PIGMENTS PLANT

Emeryville, CA    City of Emeryville Redevelopment Agency

Hazardous soils, heavy metals, corrosive, asbestos, hazardous liquids, storm water management, water treatment, ecology, and archeology.  This former paint pigment plant was built in the early 1900's on top of  a Native American Shellmound in Emeryville, CA.  With Temescal Creek running through the project and feeding the San Francisco bay within a quarter mile this project, the heavy February rains were managed and rainwater was collected over the 5-acre site and processed without any storm water contamination.  Nine buildings and two large tank farms with over 100 tanks were cleared from the site and all of the structural steel, tanks, and piping was salvaged for recycle.

FURNISHING AND OPERATING A CONCRETE RUBBLE CRUSHING PLANT

Harbor Transportation Center-Oakland, CA    Port Of Oakland

DISMANTLING OF MAGNETIC FUSION TEST FACILITY (MFTF)

LLNL, CA    Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory University of California

Dismantled and removal of the Magnetic Fusion Test Facility, a 64-meter-long vacuum vessel containing 26 coil magnets banding the center of the vessel and two 400-ton yin-yang magnet mirrors at either end. The vessel, magnets, and all associated piping and electrical gear were removed from a concrete building that was saved for future use.  A laboratory remained active in the basement while the dismantling took place eliminating the possibility of disconnecting the power to the building and an elaborate lock-out/tag-out program was implemented.  The end result was over 5,000,000 pounds of stainless steel and copper recovered for recycle. from the project.    NOTE: Honored with LLNL Safety Award
